Tai Chi Gung

12:00 pm
-
//
Location:
parish hall

Additional Text: Carrie Murray, personal trainer, teaches this class. It typically runs for 45 minutes to an hour and includes standing Tai Chi Gung exercises, but chairs are provided if needed. Many of the exercises can be modified when sitting. This practice is recommended for adults over the age of 25 or so.

The Tai Chi Gung is a simple and unique practice to equilibrium and health that was developed by Lao Tzu. Its benefits vary depending on what you are looking to achieve. The exercises may enhance your physical fitness by:

  • Improving flexibility and joint health;
  • Enhancing cardiovascular function; and
  • Strengthening the immune system.

They can also calm you, provide a deeper level of inner peace and cultivate more mindfulness. Although this practice offers many of the same benefits as the Tai Chi, it is unique in many ways. Please join the class to learn more about it and see if it is right for you! A suggested donation of $10 per class will go to Carrie; she also does Venmo.

The History of Buddhist Mindfulness

Mindfulness is everywhere: books, therapies, apps, and corporate trainings present it as an effective way to cope with the stresses of everyday life, or with more serious traumas. In this talk, Megan Bryson, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at UTK, gives an overview of how Buddhist meditation practices gradually transformed into the secularized and medicalized forms of mindfulness we frequently encounter today. We will discuss what is at stake in thinking about mindfulness as secular or religious, including mindfulness practices in other religious traditions as well as court cases centering on the perceived religiosity of mindfulness.

TVA's Cemetery Relocation Program

Cemeteries have been a part of human history for centuries. Some are abandoned and fall into disrepair unless someone steps up to care for them. We have seen ancient burial grounds that are discovered during the excavation for a building foundation. But did you know that cemeteries can be moved? Join Pat Ezell, Senior Historian at TVA, as she teaches us about the TVA's cemetery relocation project. The TVA had to move thousands of graves - what was the process? How did they do it? Come join us for this bit of East Tennessee history!
